(He bought the whole company, after all, in the second movie, just so he could keep tabs on her. Maybe Ana stays because she got another promotion at work for no goddamn reason and is actually starting to like the fact that she doesn’t seem to have to lift a finger to “succeed,” thanks to him? When some author she has been championing at her publishing company gets 200,000 preorders on his new book, surely the first thing that crossed her mind was “Did Christian place all those preorders?” It certainly was the first thing that crossed mine. They can’t make a fourth movie because it will inevitably have to include Christian murdering Ana in exactly the kind of sociopathic fit men like him inevitably end up throwing because she wore a skirt that was “too short” or some other garbage that he perceives as a threat to his ownership of her. Later, once they’re back home in Seattle, they argue over whether they’re going to have kids, and whether it is reasonable for Ana to retain her “Steele” name at least at work. Oh yes, they are now married: the movie opens with their wedding and their honeymoon in Paris and I think it’s supposed to be Monaco one of those places where obnoxious rich assholes like Christian park their obnoxious penis-extender yachts, anyway. He berates her, polices her clothing choices, orders her around, threatens her, makes demands, insults their wedding guests. “It was heartbreaking.”Īnd all these years later, it seems like Christian Grey is still haunting Hunnam. For most of the movie, Christian (Jamie Dornan: Anthropoid, Marie Antoinette) barely says anything to Ana (Dakota Johnson: How to Be Single, Black Mass) that is not awful. “It was the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing that I’ve ever had to deal with professionally,” he said in 2015. So Hunnam ultimately decided to pass on Fifty Shades, which he called “the worst professional experience of my life.” This is the kind of packed schedule some working actors dream of-but in practice, it’s far messier and emotionally damaging than in theory. Then I was going to have three days after that and I’d have to start shooting Crimson Peak, and then I’d have two days to travel and go back into Season 7 of Sons.” Hunnam said that he initially tried to cram everything in by finishing Sons, then “fly to Vancouver the next day, have 10 days of rehearsal, and then start shooting. “ ‘Guillermo still has got four months to recast, it’s the fourth lead, you can go and do this. “People were saying, ‘Are you crazy?,’ ” Hunnam said. ![]()

![]() Overall, though, Far Cry Primal puts a radical, unexpected historical twist on the first-person shooter genre that will intrigue mature gamers. As the last survivor of your hunting group, you will learn to craft a deadly arsenal, fend off fierce predators. This isn't to say that all this repetition is bad it just could've been so much better if your missions were more varied or the game were a lot shorter. Welcome to the Stone Age, a time of extreme danger and limitless adventure, when giant mammoths and sabretooth tigers ruled the Earth and humanity is at the bottom of the food chain. It even takes a while for you to learn how to train a bear to let you ride it, meaning that until that moment occurs, you're going to be walking across this massive prehistoric land, which can take lots of time. This is especially true because you're constantly looking for raw materials, but you don't really have an easy way to cart all of them back as much as you'd like (of course, there's nothing like cars or anything to help you haul items off to your village). Still, while having spears, a bow and arrow, and a club makes the fighting feel different than in previous Far Cry games (which armed you with guns), all the hunting and gathering gets a bit repetitive after a while. But it also helps that, when you take up your bow and arrow, the game's spot-on controls make you feel like you studied archery under Hawkeye from The Avengers and then interned with Katniss from The Hunger Games. All of this works together to make you feel like you're wandering a strange and dangerous land. You even get help in the form of an owl that can do aerial recon, as well as wolves, bears, and other animals that can attack on command. Because the game is set in 10,000 B.C., much of your time is dedicated to gathering resources and hunting animals, with the rest spent attacking enemy villages and defending yourself from random attacks from predators on both four legs and two. While its unique time frame prompts this first-person action series to try new things, it spends so much time on how you do them and not enough on what you’re doing that it feels a bit redundant.

This single volume Companion covers seven intersecting areas of black British cultural production since 1970: writing, music, visual and plastic arts, performance works, film and cinema, fashion and design, and intellectual life. For the purpose of the Companion, the term 'black' is used to signify African, Caribbean and South Asian ethnicities, while at the same time addressing the debates concerning notions of black Britishness and cultural identity. The publication is of particular value because despite attracting growing academic interest in recent years, this field is still often subject to critical and institutional neglect. The Companion to Contemporary Black British Culture is the first comprehensive reference book to provide multidisciplinary coverage of the field of black cultural production in Britain. ![]() Intersectionality's roots in social justice movements and critical intellectual projects-specifically Black feminism-must be retraced and synthesized with a decolonial analysis so its radical potential to actualize coalitions can be enacted. Through a close reading of critical race theorist Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw's germinal texts, published more than twenty-five years ago, Carastathis urges analytic clarity, contextual rigor, and a politicized, historicized understanding of this widely traveling concept. A provisional interpretation of intersectionality can disorient habits of essentialism, categorial purity, and prototypicality and overcome dynamics of segregation and subordination in political movements. Challenging the narratives of arrival that surround it, Carastathis argues that intersectionality is a horizon, illuminating ways of thinking that have yet to be realized consequently, calls to "go beyond" intersectionality are premature. While "intersectionality" circulates as a buzzword, Anna Carastathis joins other critical voices to urge a more careful reading. The collection also includes Warhol's "Nine Marilyns," his 1962 work celebrating Marilyn Monroe. Then there is Giacometti's "Le Nez," which is the last of the series to remain in private hands. There is a towering abstract by Rothko, called "No.7," which he painted in the seminal year of 1951. The two top works are each expected to fetch more than $70 million. The Macklowes were avid and sophisticated collectors for 50 years, gathering top works by the most prominent names in contemporary and modern art. The 65 works in the collection will be sold in two separate sales - on Nov. A guarantee means Sotheby's agrees to pay the seller a certain price, regardless of the eventual auction prices. Sotheby's declined to talk about the process of winning the sale, but people familiar with it say Sotheby's offered a guarantee of $650 million to $700 million. It was expected to come up for sale last year, but the court-appointed receiver for the collection, Michael Findlay, delayed the sale due to the pandemic. Harry Macklowe, who built some of the tallest and most expensive residential towers in Manhattan, said the collection was valued at close to $800 million, while Linda Macklowe put its value at closer to $600 million.Ĭhristie's, Sotheby's and many of New York's other top art dealers have been vying for years to sell the collection. Adam Clayton's bass is a thunderous delight, sinewy and full of bad intention. So how does "Some Days Are Better Than Other" slip past those low expectations anyway? Because of its musical ingenuity. (More on that later.) Worse, the smirking one-liners in "Some Days Are Better Than Others" couldn't possibly exceed Bono's brilliantly Lennon-esque turn on " The Fly." (There's only one that really hits home: " Some days have bouncers and won't let you in.") And then there's the Lou Reed-style talk-singing approach, which tends to rub some the wrong way. ![]() ![]() ![]() Do kids care about Tom & Jerry? Maybe not, but it's existing IP and WarnerMedia needs to mine it for all it's worth. Whether younger audiences are familiar with the eponymous cat and mouse who constantly get into outsized scuffles is immaterial both the audience and these cartoon icons are ill-served by a movie that appears to have been conjured out of whole cloth by an executive drive to exhume intellectual property come hell or high water. The story is dull, the characters are single-dimensionally bland, and the performances are stiff. But it fails in so many basic ways of cinematic storytelling. Tom & Jerry is, in many ways, aiming to be a live-action cartoon. Plenty of actors can now add to their CV that they've worked opposite characters of some kind that are created in post-production, but only a handful or two can claim that they did it well. As I watched talented actors struggle their way through a creaky script that could have just as easily been unearthed from a time capsule of the 1990s, or the 1970s, or the 1950s, and spruced up a bit, I thought about how difficult it truly must have been for Hoskins to not only "interact" with animated characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but how few actors since have effectively followed his example. ‘Tom and Jerry’ isn’t deep or complicated, but it works as a fun, nostalgic trip that will enthral kids while bringing back childhood memories for the adults.I spent a large chunk of the experience of watching Tom & Jerry thinking about the late Bob Hoskins. Still, it doesn’t take away from the sheer enjoyment of watching the beloved duo get up to their mischief. ![]() It’s a difficult juggling act, and some scenes feel a bit too stretched out. The film struggles to keep your attention as it switches between the human drama and the slapstick comedy with the animated characters. The real heroes are, of course, Tom and Jerry who never miss an opportunity to get into their classic spats, and yet, somehow, still manage to look out for each other in their own ways. Colin Jost and Pallavi Sharda both channelize influencer couple cheesiness as Ben and Preeta, though there’s more going on there. Michael Pena brings his distinctive style to Terrance, a stickler for his distinguished property's old school values. It helps that Chloe Grace Moretz is generally likeable, and her charm is on full display as Kayla, the new employee trying to impress her bosses. This film’s broad storyline tries to flesh out some of the human characters. The toons' whole appeal was the creative ways these frenemies would go at each other, resulting in slapstick at its best. It does a massive favour because it immediately takes you back, thanks to the animators. Director Tim Story captures that classic feel in this live-action animated film, by featuring the animated characters as modernized renditions of the 2D cartoons. So, when Kayla comes across Tom, she enrols him to help her with Jerry.įor the 80s and 90s kids, the beloved cartoon series invokes a strong sense of nostalgia. No reputed hotel wants a rodent around, but when new employee Kayla (Chloe Grace Moretz), is tasked with getting rid of the little fellow, she finds herself outwitted.
